Antonio Boal Vintage Port 2014

Made from Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional and Tinta Roriz.

There is not a lot of 2014 Vintage Port available as it was a year that went mostly undeclared with only a few shippers declaring. However, the vintage wines that were made were generally of a good quality. 2014 was also historic for Boal Family Estates in that it is Antonio’s first declared vintage and along with wine maker Paulo Nunes, he was pretty confident that he had a blend capable of ageing well.

After 20 months aging, it was bottled in 2016. It is drinking well now and like other 2014 declared ports, it will cellar well over the coming years. It is smooth and mouthfilling with rich, ripe blackberries and plums, and a noticeable but soft backbone of tannin. With a chocolate and slightly mint imbued finish you can start to taste the development of riper figs, dates and sweet spice.

Boal Family Estates

We discovered Antonio Boal’s wines on a recent trip to Lisbon (February 2020) and after making contact he drove down to meet us the next day (he doesn’t let the grass grow under his feet!). Antonio is the 4th generation of the Boal family to run the Quintas in Douro Superior and the neighbouring area of Tras os Montes and is aided and abetted by award winning winemaker Paolo Nunes. The vines are farmed sustainably with natural fermentation in the cellar, resulting in balanced and refreshing wines.
