Red wine
Olianas Cannonau di Sardegna
Made with Cannonau (aka Grenache or Garnacha) which is Sardinia’s main red variety. Low yielding vines are hand harvested and then 70% of the wine is made in stainless steel vats, the other 30% is fermented in amphorae – the final wine is blended and aged for 3 months in oak. This is a wine with personality and energy – lots of blueberry, umeboshi plum, sweet spice, toast, tobacco and violet. The wine weighs in somewhere between medium and full body with a freshness that makes you want to go back for more.

This range of wines has become a staff favourite and extremely popular on the lists of some of the best Italian restaurants here in Ireland. Based around 60km north of Cagliari the vineyards have been in Artemio Olianas’s family since 1919. Artemio joined forces with Stefano Casadei (see Castello del Trebbio and Tenuta Casadei) in 2000 and the modern incarnation of the winery was born. Today they farm 25hA of vines organically and with a process they call biointegrale which involves integrating with nature – so no mechanisation in the vineyard (horses instead), plenty of farm animals on the land and only natural herbicides and fertilizers. In the winery Stefano who spent quite a bit of time in Georgia uses a lot of natural materials with partial or total fermentation in clay amphorae. All fermentations are spontaneous and there is little or no sulphur added at bottling. Stefano’s daughter Elena makes a micro range of wines made in Amphorae which we get a small allocation of, so please get in touch if you’re interested.
