Red wine
CAN RAFOLS DEL CAUS SUMOLL PENEDES
A little known, light red wine made from Sumoll, an indigenous grape variety that almost went out of existence. Hand harvested from 50 year old vines with natural fermentation and aging in large chestnut barrels. On the nose it is predominantly red fruit – cherry, raspberry and cranberry with a hint of smokiness and spice. On the palate it is light bodied, fresh, crisp and clean. Low tannin level with the acidity, minerality and flavour of cranberry and pomegranate. Only 1,356 bottles made of this, the 2014 vintage.

the producer
Can Rafols del Caus
Founded by Carlos Esteva in 1979 when he returned to his grandfather’s estate in Avinyonet del Penedès located just 30 minutes inland from Barcelona. As well as nurturing rare and indigenous grapes he has restored the old Masia or Finca to its former glory and built one of the most impressive wine cellars we have visited (the entrance and cellar itself feels like a cross between a set from an Indiana Jones and Bond movie!). What to expect from the wines – mineral laden whites and complex, elegant reds with lots of energy and personality.
