Benanti Serra della Contessa Etna Rosso Riserva

A single vineyard red made from co-planted Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio at 500M above sea level. The vines are pre-phylloxera low yielding old vines harvested in late September or October. After fermentation with indigenous yeast the wine is aged for 24 months in large French oak barrels with another year in bottle. Again, a light colour in the glass with aromatics of red fruit, dark cherry, violet, tobacco and herbal notes with lots of smoky minerality. Richer and fuller than the Etna Rosso with good ageing potential.

the producer

Benanti

The pioneer winery in modern Etna wine production founded by Giuseppe Benanti in 1988. Nowadays run by twin sons Antonio and Salvino (it’s very hard to tell them apart!) they produce outstanding wines really representative of the area using only local indigenous grapes – Carricante for the whites, Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio for the reds. These wines are cool climate wines for lovers of crisp, mineral whites and elegant, complex reds that are on the lighter side.
